  • Auckland businesses running on lean

    There are fewer employees earning more than six figures; the demand for part time or flexi time for admin roles is up on last year and starting salaries are lower in 2010 than 2009.

    These are some of the findings from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce 2010 salary survey covering 120 roles from over 400 Auckland businesses.

    Chamber Chief Executive Michael Barnett reports that overall remuneration packages have stayed flat in 2010 with most firms demonstrating that when the economy gets tough, they can and do operate lean.

    The survey also revealed that many marketing roles have suffered a reduction in salary while customer facing positions have seen a modest rise.  Sales positions that had a technical requirement were best rewarded with increases averaging around 3%.

    Some trade roles associated with the building industry that suffered in the 2009 survey had also seen small rises to their 2010 income.

    Mr Barnett said that of particular interest were the large numbers of firms that have provided “other income” benefits rather than money to attract and retain employees.  These benefits included flexibility around time and place of work and professional memberships.

    Also of note was the fact that there were less company cars included in packages, Mr Barnett said.
